Kettleworks & St Georges Urban Village

The Kettleworks & St Georges Urban Village (SGUV) project in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter was a £30 million development that created 292 homes by repurposing and renovating old industrial buildings. The SGUV, as the second phase of the regeneration, added 291 apartments and 13 townhouses while demolishing some structures and preserving neighbouring ones. New steel-frame buildings were constructed, including a car park with penthouse flats, forming a central courtyard and connecting key streets in the area.

About the project

The Kettleworks was a £30 million scheme which generated 292 new homes in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, located between Pope Street and Camden Street. The scheme formed the first phase of the St Georges Urban Village regeneration.

The project involved partial demolition, renovation, and new construction. It repurposed an existing concrete frame building as a car park, with penthouse flats built atop the roof using a lightweight steel frame.

The old factory building was renovated, its steel frame treated, and a new steel-frame building was adjoined along Pope and Camden Street. This arrangement created a central courtyard and a walkway between the new build and the car park, linking Pope and Camden Street.

The St Georges Urban Village (SGUV) project, the second phase of the regeneration involved the construction of 291 apartments and 13 townhouses between Moreton, Pope, Albion, and Camden Street in the Jewellery Quarter.

The existing site was covered by abandoned industrial buildings, which were demolished, while several neighbouring buildings were preserved. The new structures were built using steel-framed construction.
